Our English Curriculum
Intent
Our English curriculum is designed to nurture a love of reading and writing through enabling our learners to embed key knowledge and skills in speaking, reading and writing.
Talk
We place an emphasis on ‘talking’ to ensure all pupils have the knowledge, including correct use of grammar, required to progress as able readers and writers by ultimately talking ‘like a writer’.
Our speaking and listening curriculum and Oracy Progression Map can be viewed below.
Writing
Our carefully selected, high-quality texts have been chosen to expose our pupils to high level vocabulary and a range of writing styles to allow them to explore a broad range of texts that represent themselves, their community, society and the wider-world. Our structured curriculum provides all our children with opportunities to write for a range of purposes that inform, entertain, persuade and discuss.
See Writing Long Term Plan and Genre Progression Map below.
Our cycle of writing allows children to be immersed in the full process of writing that allows them to develop the confidence to become authors.
Time is allocated to planning to give our pupils enough ‘dream time’ to be creative and craft beautiful sentences
The cycle includes explicit teaching of grammar and punctuation skills along with proof-reading and editing skills – see Writing Composition Progression Map below to complete finished pieces of writing with pride.
We have high expectations for all our pupils to achieve automaticity in age-appropriate spelling and handwriting skills. See Transcription Progression Map below.
See Writing Cycle below.
Pupils are also immersed in dramatic activities.
Activities and support for parents, children and young people to improve language, literacy and communication skills from home.
