Reading
Reading fluency is a priority. Children in their early years develop a strong foundation in phonics through rigorous teaching of our chosen systematic synthetic phonics programme: Rocket Phonics. We aim for all children to achieve high levels of automaticity. Assessment is key, gaps are quickly identified and interventions put in place to ensure children ‘keep up’ with the pace of learning. All staff have a sound knowledge in the teaching of phonics and incorporate this when teaching in later years to ensure children can draw on their previous knowledge of phonemes/graphemes to decode unfamiliar words, when encouraged to use adventurous word choices and exploring new spelling. All year groups explicitly teach the skills required to respond to a variety of questions about a text using a structed lesson sequence of VIPERS.
We endeavour to foster a love of reading through teacher modelling, daily ‘Everyone Reading In Class’ time, quality class reads and story time, along with many other additional opportunities such as: regular use of the school library, reading club, visiting authors and sponsored events.
